Case in point:
Can you guess what's going on in this picture?
Yeah. We had a pretty bad ice storm last week -- bad enough to close businesses and schools. And on the day that everything opened again, I had a bit of an accident. I was walking to my office from my car in our company's parking deck and had an encounter with a patch of black ice. I didn't even see it coming, and the next thing I knew my feet were up in the air.
Want to guess where I landed? CA-RACK!!!
See that black gap that's lightly circled?
Yeah, that's a clean break in the bone.
Directly on my right elbow, cracking the bone. I also bruised some ribs. And the only way to repair the type of injury I sustained is with surgery ... and fast. I'm scheduled to have a metal plate and screws attached to my bones early tomorrow morning.
So it's been a rough week ... and I don't think it's going to get any better for at least the next few days. I might not be around much, but I'm working tonight on pre-loading a few posts. I'll be sure to post with my status as soon as I can!
OH NO!! That will seriously put a kink in your sewing :( Bummer. I'm so sorry... hope they make you feel better.. or at the very least give you lots of little dots in a container that take away the hurt. Feel better SOON!

ReplyDeleteOh man! That stinks. I pray that it heals correctly!
ReplyDeleteMy husband did a similar thing, except he cracked the end off his elbow and had to have loads of stuff in order to keep it together. He found this hand gripper thing to help regain his strength back in his hand and arm. If you need more info let me know.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry!! I hope you heal fast and are back in the swing of things soon!
ReplyDeleteouch!! i feel some of your pain... i just had shoulder surgery 1 1/2 weeks ago and i've got that much left to go before i'm out of the sling and in PT. no sewing, writing or much else for me until then and sure you've got some of the same.

ReplyDeleteHopefully your surgery was successful and the process of healing has already begun. May you be back doing the things you love real soon.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better.
ReplyDeleteOh YOW! I used to encounter black ice on the roads when I lived near the Snowy Mountains. It's difficult to prepare for what you can't see. Hope your surgery goes well and you're back to stitching soon.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you. I hope surgery and recovery go smoothly and you're back on your feet soon. Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteTake good care, John. Hope all goes well and that you're feeling better soon. All my best to you!
ReplyDeleteAack! (This is my first winter in NC, and I've noticed dreadful ice lingering far, far too long.) Wishing you a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteOh John, yikes! Hang in there, mend fast, and you'll be back to cutting and sewing again in no time. /pat
ReplyDeleteOh good luck with this - I so feel for you - both with the injury and even more so, with being held back from sewing. My husband had a large screw put in one of his fingers last year after a footballing injury - it was far less traumatic than anitcipated & the physiotherapy definitely helped hugely with regaining mobility quickly. His finger does look a bit odd, but men seem to wear these scars well!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a speedy recovery
Florence
Oh goodness. I can feel your pain (literally). I broke my elbow, both the radius and humerus (capitellum) on 11/2 and had ORIF surgery also. I am guessing you are right handed, as well. I’m a leftie and broke my left :( Not being able to sew has been a real bummer. I hope you are feeling good and wish you the best in your recovery. It takes a while and a lot of work, but being driven to get back on the sewing machine is a great motivator! Feel free to e-mail me if you want to ask questions or just vent or commiserate.
ReplyDeleteKaren (naturemomm)
Ouch! Wishing you a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteOh No John, that sucks... I know how you feel I broke my foot yesterday and that sucks too.. surgery no! I hope not.. find out next week.I pray you recover very quickly and can sew again soon...Love the quilt in the next post.. looks fab.
ReplyDeleteHusg Dawn x
John don't feel alone I live in shelby and broke my right wrist last year and my left this year. The surgeon and I are now good friends. I left Chicago for warmer weather I thought. On a side note if you find a great new ergo cutter let us know. Good luck with rehab it takes time.
ReplyDeleteThis elbow thing is putting a damper on my hopes that I'll see something from Quilt Dad made from I Spy Spoonflower fabrics. :)
ReplyDeleteHope the forced slowing down is a good time for re-energizing!
Susan
So, when I first opened this post and only saw the top of the x-ray without reading the title or any context, the first thing I thought was Baby Ultrasound! lol! Sorry about your arm though :(
