I'm really happy to be sharing a sneak peek of the new book Modern Mix: 16 Sewing Projects that Combine Designer Prints & Solid Fabrics by my friend Jessica Levitt. Jessica, who blogs at Juicy Bits, is a mom, sewer, crafter, and fabric designer with two amazing collections (Timber and Kingdom) already under her belt. With the release of Modern Mix, Jessica can now add author to that list. And even though she went to Dook University, we get along pretty well. ; )
So what's Modern Mix all about? The book contains 7 quilt patterns along with other project ideas for other home decor items (like pillows), bags, fashion accessories, and other gift ideas -- 16 in total -- all with a single focus: mixing and matching prints with solids to discover new and innovative design possibilities.
The projects in Modern Mix are broken out into four distinct sections, based upon how the patterns incorporate solid fabrics:
- Back Me Up -- projects that use solid fabrics as a background for your favorite prints
- Strips and Stripes -- projects that add strips of solids to highlight your gorgeous prints
- Accentuate the Positive -- projects that introduce little bits of solid colors to bring out the best in pattern
- Steal the Show -- patterns that feature solids as the focus of the project
I've spoken with many quilters who are hesitant to mix and match fabrics across collections and selecting solid tones to help bring their projects to life. Large scale prints in particular seem to pose the biggest challenge. Within Modern Mix, in addition to a wealth of fresh, contemporary sewing patterns (and beautiful photography to match), Jessica offers her readers several design tips for pairing solids with large-scale prints.
Want to get to know Jessica a bit better? I've asked her a few (very random and silly) questions for your enjoyment!
Q: What's your favorite jam from the Billboard Top 100 of 1984?
http://eightiesclub.tripod.
Wow, what a trip down memory lane. I'll answer it straight up and go with Thriller, but it may have something to do with Halloween coming up. However, this list inspired the "2 truths and a lie" below.
Q: If you could choose a single pair of Converse All-Stars to wear every single day for the next year, which color / print would you choose and why?
http://www.converse.com/?CSID=
This would make me very VERY unhappy. I'm not against All-stars, I've owned a pair, and love them on my kids....but one pair of shoes for a whole year?!?! I think only a man could write that question. :)
But to play along, I'd say these leather boot-like ones fit my style the most. I'm going for the most versatile here and I could see wearing these even when more dressed up. But they would cause a problem in the summer. Guess I'd just have to go barefoot...
- The Princess Bride
- Beauty and the Beast
- French Kiss
OK, so let's talk a bit about the giveaway. Stash Books will send a copy of Modern Mix to one lucky Quilt Dad reader, to be selected randomly from those who leave a comment on this post. And to sweeten the pot, I'm throwing in a full fat quarter bundle of Jessica's newest fabric line, Kingdom.
Here I am wrestling to get some good photos of the quilt on a particularly windy day here in North Carolina. Thanks to Mrs. Quilt Dad for patiently bearing with me as I tried to get the "perfect shot"!
So want to win your very own copy of Modern Mix PLUS a full fat quarter bundle of Kingdom? Simply leave a comment on this post and answer the following question:
TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE: two of the following statements from Jessica based on the Billboard Top 100 Songs of 1984 are true, and one is a big fat stinky lie. Let me know which one you think is the untruth in the comments below, and you could win!

- "Self Control" - by Laura Branigan (#24) -- The first concert I ever went was Laura Branigan, and when I got home I sketched the different outfits she changed into.
- "The Wild Boys" - by Duran Duran (#25) --Duran Duran was my favorite boy band, and my dad finally took me to see them after I proved my love by naming and spelling correctly all the members' names.
- "Legs" - by ZZ Top (#65) --I dressed as the lead singer to ZZ Top (beard and all) for Halloween in 5th grade

ReplyDeleteI'll guess #3. :)
ReplyDeleteI vote for Number 1, who's Laura Branigan?
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, I think the lie is Duran Duran (#2), but that is just a guess. I can't believe there top three movies! I overlap on two of them (French Kiss and The Princess Bride!). Wowee! Maybe I'll be the lucky ducky winner?!
ReplyDeleteThis is a complete shot in the dark: #3 is the lie.
ReplyDeleteOh my, your Kingdom Courtyards quilt is gorgeous! Bravo! And i will guess #3 to be less than truthful.
ReplyDeleteI would say #2 is a lie just because she is so creative I could see her doing the other two but just a guess. I love her fabric and the quilt is beyond gorgeous . Sandra
ReplyDeleteI, too, think #2 is the lie. Thanks for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt. I think the guys in Duran Duran have the same name so that would be the falsehood. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for the great interview! I think #3 is the lie.
ReplyDeleteSandy A
I think #3 is false!
ReplyDeleteI'm going with #3, but if that is a true story, I would LOVE to see a picture, how cute she would have been! The book looks awesome, btw...and the fabric is gorgeous. :-)

ReplyDeleteI WANT this book so much that as soon as I don't win it, I'll actually buy it, and I seldom do that. However, I hope it doesn't work out that way. :)
Thx for the chance to win.
I'll guess #2 is the lie, only because my Dad would have required a whole lot more than naming & spelling members' names. Thanks for the great giveaway.
ReplyDeletemy vote is #3! :)

ReplyDeleteI can smell a lie out of thin air, so I'd say it's #1.
# 3, maybe LOL! I have to say the movie...Princess Bride would be on my list as well! Is that inconceivable or what!!
ReplyDeleteYou always ask such great intervierw questions John. It's nice to see unique questions to help us get to know the person you are interviewing. I love Jessica's line Kingdom and your pattern Kingdom Courtyards is super. I'd love, love to win this giveaway.(as I wipe drool from my mouth, hehe)I think it's the second picture of Kingdom Courtyards (pictured above) that looks like it's floating!. A magical quilt perhaps? I think #2 is the fib. I'm probably putting too much thought into it, but figuring Jessica is around your age then she'd be about nine years old in 1984 and...well I think it's a fib.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stash Books and Jessica for the giveaways and the chance to win.
I'm going with option 3 as being wrong, really don't know though so it's a stab in the dark
ReplyDeleteI think number 1 smells fishy. I love your Kingdom Courtyards....it really shows of the colors of her collection!
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling totally lost, because I was all of -2 in 1984, but I'll go with #1 being the lie.

ReplyDeleteI think #3 is the lie. That book looks really intriguing, and I love those fabrics!
ReplyDeleteI'll guess #1
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say #2 is the lie just because #1 sounds like a designer/quilter and #3 is just too funny to be a lie.

ReplyDeleteI think number 3 is wrong, just because I think the beard is a little creepy.
ReplyDelete#2 - spelling vs designing? No, I think not.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea which one is false but I think making a kid spell something is a very dad thing to do and I could imagine a zz top costume so I'm going to guess #1
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that #1 is the untruth. I hope. Thanks for a great giveaway!

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful give away, thanks so much for the chance...
I am going to guess that number 2 is the lie. I think they all seem plausible. Love the quilt, John. Is there a pattern available. I would love to win this...here's hoping.

I think #1 is the lie. My memory is a little fuzzy but I don't recall Laura Branigan being much of a fashion plate.
ReplyDeleteI am going with #2 but don't know why. However, no matter what, I really think I am going to have to buy this book even though I am not normally a modern or contemporary quilter.
