One Stoplight Town | A free pattern!

Pooches & Pickups

A few months ago, designer Laurie Wisbrun sent me a bundle of half-yard cuts of her adorable new line, Pooches & Pickups for Robert Kaufman fabrics. I immediately fell in love with the vibrant primary colors of the line and the versatile prints that are appropriate for little and big boys alike!

Pooches & Pickups

I was inspired to design and make an original quilt pattern, and today I'm making the pattern available for all of my wonderful readers! It's a quick and easy-to-assemble pattern, with nice big blocks to show off the line's large-scale prints.

The retro vibe of the vintage pick-up trucks and the big dogs riding in the back called to mind summer afternoons, drive-in movies, old school gas pumps, and the very best laid-back country music, all of which combined to inspire the name of my pattern: One Stoplight Town.

One Stoplight Town

I selected several shades of Kona cotton solid fabrics to complement the prints, and incorporated them into the design.

I also have the perfect recipient for this quilt in mind. A childhood friend of mine and her husband had their first baby -- a boy -- a little over a year ago. I've long been wanting to make a quilt especially for baby Mason, but lacked both the time and the perfect selection of boy-friendly prints that could grow with him. I'm glad I waited, because Pooches & Pickups is the perfect match!

One Stoplight Town

Interested in making your own version of this quilt? Download a PDF of the free pattern here: One Stoplight Town

If you make One Stoplight Town, I'd love to see it! Please send me a photo or a link to your blog or Flickr stream.

Pooches & Pickups

And Laurie was generous enough to send an extra fat quarter bundle of Pooches & Pickups for a lucky Quilt Dad reader. Want a chance to win? Simply leave a comment on this post and let me know another fabric combination that you think would really bring One Stoplight Town to life!

I'll randomly select a winner next Friday, 11/4. Good luck!

  12. I have two girls, so I tend to think in 'girl' colours (even though my eldest is not a 'girly-girl' LOL). I'd love to make this up in Aneela Hooey's Little Apples - to remind me of my one stoplight town. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Two bad it wasn't "Two Stoplight Town" then I could say " I live there!" I think this would look really neat with all solids. I might have to try it. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think adding some Hometown for the "solids" would be fun. I love the dogs and trucks in this new line.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would definitely incorporate some kind of gray, but I am kind of on a gray kick right now. It's so hard to find good designer quality boy fabric. This is a fabulous line!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think this would look great with Dr. Seuss or comic book character fabric lines.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  43. urban zoology! i think the bold prints and colors would really work well with your very linear (totally cool) pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Great job - great vision for this larger scale print. Another larger scale might be wrenly - I love those birdies, but not sure I want to cut them up. Or Tula Pink's collections - sometimes it is fun to chop up and hide the design, but sometimes you want to remember there's really a snail in that scallop. Actually, lots of little boy prints (the Timeless treasures shipyard prints) would be good here - they want to see the vehicles!

    ReplyDelete
  45. What a great way to highlight that adorable fabric. I think I need to get some of that red truck fabric as hubby drives a red truck!:)

I have some lovely grey and yellow fabrics in my stash...some with some really big prints...this pattern would really let them shine!;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I would try this pattern with some Caleb Gray Robot Factory and some solids for extra boy fun and added punch! The larger pieces are great for some novelty fabric. It's wonderful to have a pattern that shows off the fun fabric I'm always stocking up on! Don't tell!

    ReplyDelete
  47. That pattern is super cute! If I was working with Laurie's fabrics it would need to be my all time fave Tufted tweets other than that the size of the blocks lend themselves really well to the Echino Fall 2011 line.

    ReplyDelete
  48. a combination of solids with a polka dot binding would show case thess fun fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would definitely add more solids, in the primary colors of the Pooches fabric. Really cute stuff, I'm going to have to track some of that down for my young lad.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Great pattern and love that fabric! I think this pattern would be lovely with Little Apples!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have two grandsons who would love these fabrics! I like the gray/blue/green combination and would add a stripe, and a "green light" block to your darling quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That´s a really simple pattern made with such pretty fabric!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  56. I was actually thinking of taking it the girly direction and using florals with a solid green for the small strips, like grass or leaves, but then I saw someone else's post about red, yellow and green and thought that was super cute!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Great quilt. It shows off the fabric so well. I'm thinking for a girl maybe some Heather Bailey fabrics. I think it could show off some of her larger floral prints really well. Again, your work is wonderful. I love little boy prints.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I am going to join the white group. I think it would accent the fabric and showcase the designer.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  60. Loved your quilt! I think it would look nice using a variety of florals as well.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks John, that is so fun! I bet a bunch of Kaffe Ikats/stripes with shots as the vertical bars would look very different, but also give it a cool guy-vibe! There's tons of awesome new robot fabric out now, too which would be fun.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. This would be great with castle peeps!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't know that I have a specific suggestion but there are so many lines out there now that have bigger prints to show off I think you have lots of options. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I was also thinking of Happy Mochi Yum Yum, but keeping all those little boys in mind I think Bella Lu Studio's Building Up collection, or Caleb Gray's Robot Factory would work well.

  87. I dont know Fabrics to say what would go well with it.

but I agree that large scale prints would do well.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ohhh... terrain. Totally. I love that the pieces are big enough to allow whatever fabric is chosen to actually stand out. I love intricate quilts, but some fabrics are just too gorgeous to chop up so small!

    ReplyDelete
  89. i really like the way that there's a natural line to all of the prints and you've inserted the kona lines in the other direction. i think tula pink's prince charming prints have the same sort of "natural line" feel to them with the frogs and the raindrops.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'm thinking Ruby, but there are a lot of great options!

    ReplyDelete
  111. I admit, I'm just thinking Kona Solids - although, really, anything with a 'big print' would probably do well with the One Stoplight Town pattern.

Silent Cinema? Valley of the Kings? Hm. Maybe the 'Australiana' collection by Robert Kaufman?

Thanks for the giveaway - I know a couple of boys who'd love a quilt made from that collection! :)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  113. I'd go with all solids! Then you could play with texture on the quilting - each block a different FMQ pattern?

    ReplyDelete
  114. I see another commenter said Outfoxed. That would be my choice, too! This pattern would be so cute used with that fabric line.

    ReplyDelete
  115. When I read your post title, I thought that you had borrowed one of my comments. I live near a one stoplight town (the only stoplight in the county). When my family first moved here, that stoplight was upside down and weekend night fun was sitting at the stoplight to see if anyone drove by... and my brother's dog always rides in the back of his pickup. So, want to win!
BTW, Robot Factory or Superhero (think that's the name) would be great boy's fabrics for your pattern. I love it! Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete

  122. I have found the cutest I spy quilt pattern that this fabric would work wonders with. That is my goal, is to collect as many images as I can to work into that quilt for kids.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'd use it with a plain cotton I think so that the dog prints can do the talking; both my boys desperately want a dog and this way they could have one that won't chew their shoes!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I think Little Apples would be great also. I also have in mind Ruby and Lizzy House Peeps.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I'd love to see it done in Windham's Rocky and Bullwinkle!

  151. I am working on a quilt with Hometown right now, and I think that would be most appropriate for "One Stoplight Town" I kinda miss the days where there were more one stoplight towns. I love this fabric and have thought of getting some for my grandson, but just haven't gotten to it yet. I'd love to win some though...here's hoping.

Thanks for the chance. smdecoste@yahoo.com

  154. Using the palette of Cosmo Cricket Circa with coordinating kona solids, then adding some of the Echino vehicle and dots prints might provide an interesting version of this very masculine quilt. However, I really do like the one you made with the glorious old pickup prints of the very talented Laurie, I'm grateful for your ideas and postings to help me make a quilt for one of my nephews but a quilt he might like! Thank-you.
