I've received word that my little quilt for The Quilting Pirate's Holiday Booty Swap has reached its new home, so it's safe to share some pictures.
I made this little quilt from a charm pack of "Peace on Earth" by 3 Sisters for Moda. My swap partner, Cheryl, indicated that she likes traditional Christmas colors and patterns and I thought that this selection fit the bill just perfectly.
I took this opportunity to audition a block pattern for a larger quilt that I am also currently working on. It's from the Fall '08 Easy Quilts magazine. It's very easy to cut and piece and I love the look of the simple blocks.
The quilt's about 24" x 24" or so.
I've been trying to find a labeling method that I like. I love designing labels that can be printed on my computer, but I haven't mastered hand-stitching it on the back yet. Plus, I went through an entire 5-sheet pack of $12 printer fabric that all had to go in the trash because of printer issues.
So this time, I tried simply taking a 5.5" square of white fabric, ironing it in half, lining up the raw edges with the corner of the quilt and stitching it under my binding. I then used a Micron pigma pen to write out the deets. I'm pretty happy with this method, though I'm not too proud of my handwriting!
Another fun swap. Thanks, Toni, for setting it up! Now I can look forward to receiving my Christmas-themed quilt in the mail soon ...

The quilt is so pretty. I love the muted colors of the season. Great choice of fabrics on that one. I also like the block style. I have the F&P Easy Quilts mag that you mention. I will have to check it out. I would like to make a doll quilt for my daughter for Christmas and the block style you used is perfect.
ReplyDeleteJen :)
That is a great traditional Christmas quilt! I'm a new reader- just thought I'd say hi and that I think it's too cool that you're such a talented quilter.
ReplyDeleteAnd I forgot to say.. Great way to label your quilt. I think that's the way I'm going to go myself.
ReplyDeleteJen :)
Looks great! At first I thought it was a disappearing 9 patch, but then I looked closer - it's a fun little block! Can't wait to see your full-sized project :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a great little quilt! You really can't beat the Micron pigma pens. They're the way that I do most of my labels. And I'm sure in the future it will be nice to have someone's handwritten words.
ReplyDeleteDid you see how I did my last label? I quilted it in the quilt. It was kind of cool. I just whip stitched it to the back, first. But, I'm sure that you could use a machine stitch to put it on there. The key is that you have put it on before you quilt it. Which means remembering to put it on the back before you quilt it. LOL
I also like to handwrite my labels, but here's a little trick to make it easier - iron a piece of freezer paper to the back of the fabric before you write on it. It will keep the fabric flat and smooth so the pen doesn't stick or jump.
ReplyDeleteYou realize, of course, that if you put a 2nd "label" in the other corner, you have a situation that makes a hanger. A wooden dowel can be slipped right into those corners (or any other piece of wood or plastic that fits).
ReplyDeleteI really like that zine also; some good ideas in there.
Speaking of freezer paper, I have some that washes out! So I use that under my labels and leave it in while I stitching them on. When the quilt is washed, the paper disappears. Magic.
what a fabulous quilt! your label is great, too.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea for how to do the label! I'll have to do that myself!

This is really a great traditional quilt. Neat label!
ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteI also use this method to label my quilts. The only difference is that i use a extra finepoint sharpie to handwrite my information --- I cannot write on fabric with the pigmas, and the sharpies do not bleed or fade when ironed before washing your quilt.
Love your blog - you have wonderful ideas and beautiful quilts.
Marsha
I found that I really like Identipens for writing on fabrics much better than Micron - the point is less fine and they are much easier to use. They also have a thin tip/thick tip option, which is great if you are doodling...
