Happy Free-Pieced Words

Free Pieced Letters

Wow, I can't believe it's been over three weeks since I last posted. Where does the time go?? Well, summer's in full swing here ... which means swim lessons, day camp, and my busy time at work. Plus, get a l oad of the string of luck we've had here over the past 2 weeks:
  • Mrs. Quilt Dad accidentally put her hand through a pane on our front window. She didn't have a scratch (luckily!), but it had to be replaced.
  • Our hot water heater blew, and that too had to be replaced.
  • While the repairman was replacing the hot water heater, he noticed that the water line running to our refrigerator / ice maker had a leak, and had to be replaced ...
  • ... and he also noticed some early signs of mold in our crawl space. We need to have someone come take a look at that this week. $$$$$ ......
  • Last Tuesday, I had to leave work early to pick up the kids and take them to swim lessons. Of course, I was running late, and when I got out to the car the battery was dead. I finally got a jump, got the kids, got them to swim lessons, stood an hour in the pouring rain, got them back in the van ... and it was dead again. Had to jump it again -- in the pouring rain, mind you -- and immediately get it replaced.
  • On the way home from swim lessons on Thursday, twin #1 was complaining of a tummy ache and proceeded to get sick all over the back seat of my car.
  • We finally got out of the house last night (Friday) for some adults-only time to celebrate my wife's birthday -- yummy dinner with friends and a showing of "The Hangover" -- until the babysitter called to let us know that the stomach bug had moved on to twin #2. Which brings us to today.
What's that saying, "if it wasn't for bad luck ..." ??? Ugh, sorry for the downer. Let's just hope things turn around for me in time for Father's Day tomorrow!

Clearly, I haven't been able to work on much lately, though I've made some progress on Dana's sew-along quilt (and I'm loving it so much that I can hardly stand it! Can't wait to show it off here ...)

Since it's been so long. I've got a few things backed up in the queue to share here on my blog. The first are some free-pieced word blocks that I made a few weeks back. I've also wrapped up a couple of quilting bee blocks that I'll get posted shortly.

Have you ever checked out Tonya's blog over at Lazy Gal Quilting? I knew that she's known all over blog-land as the queen of free-piecing letters (among other things), but I hadn't really had the opportunity to give the whole free-piecing thing a whirl. I was checking out Dionne's blog over at Sew Many Quilts and she mentioned that Tonya put a call out for quilt blocks for an upcoming project.

The project is called "Hope is a 4-letter Word", and Tonya was looking for 6.5" x 12.5" blocks featuring a "happy, positive, wonderful four-letter word" in bright and happy colors. I thought this sounded like such a fun little project and the perfect opportunity to practice free-pieced letters.

Free Pieced Letters

In true Quilt Dad fashion, I couldn't stop at just one!

Making these blocks was a really enjoyable experience, and I can't wait to see how Tonya's quilt turns out!

  3. Boy what a week you had! I sure hope that all your "bad" luck ends before Father's Day. I wish you a stress and stomach bug free day. Here's to hoping everyone else stays well. Your free pieced letters are fantastic for this being the first try at it. I think you may have a future in free piecing.

  7. Hi Quilt Dad, I do love your ideas and your blog is a great read. I'm in New Zealand so a bit far to enter in block swaps but what neat ideas. I think I'll make a word quilt for my grandchildren. And maybe one for me to remind me sometimes about Hope and to Live Life. Thanks for sharing the links. I'll be back.

  8. I realize this may sound sick and twisted....but it is so nice to hear of a man stuck in the rain, dead batteries, sick kids, etc...etc...etc. Not that I am happy this happened to you specifically....I'm not. I am a stay at home Mom and this is exactly what happens all the time....then I trip over the electric cords or something!! Nuts but it happens. Good news is this too shall pass....it always does. As they say...don't sweat the small stuff. Easier said than done :)
    Great piecing....fun colors.
    Smiles,
    Kelly

  33. Sorry about barforama! Happens to all families sooner or later. The hot water heater cutting loose is always a fun time, too. We switched over to on demand hot water heaters and would never go back!! More expensive going in, but well worth it. We have a propane unit that feeds the kitchen and an electric one that feeds the bathrooms and they are valved in the middle so we can feed both areas from either side. System redundancy is my DH's middle name! During power outages on generator power we feed from the propane side as the electric unit draws too much juice. Consider it. We have also converted from burning heating oil to electric heat pump.
