Mug Rug MADNESS!


Did you know that it's Mug Rug Madness week over on Erin's blog? She's pulled together a wonderful collection of posts about mug rugs (what the heck are they? how big should they be?) as well as giveaways and fun tutorials in case you're itching to jump on the bandwagon.

Which you should, because it's a fun bandwagon to be on. Case in point: check out the two mug rugs I made for our last Triangle Modern Quilt Guild meeting. We had a mug rug swap and here's what I contributed:

First, a scrappy Parisville version using scraps from my ribbon quilt. I adapted Elizabeth's technique from her Map of the States block to draw up some templates for this one. The wonk is probably too subtle to get the full effect, though.

For my next one, I used fabrics from Patty Young's Flora & Fauna collection. I love the colors and basic design of this one. Again, I made a scrappy binding which I think turned out great.

And here are all of the mug rugs that were swapped. I took home the amazingly crafted bunny one as well as the bright cross-design one right next to it.

    How do you machine sew on your bindings (which look great, by the way)? I do it the hard way, by sewing it on one side, flipping it to the back and hand sewing it down. It takes forever!

    As soon as I finish my footstool pincushions (one for me and one for the girl) I want to go crazy on these. I'm seeing presents for everyone. Course the next thing I think was supposed to be the blockapalooza quilt!

    They are fun aren't they?!:) I've started to make them with the scraps from whatever quilt I've just finished.
    There is one on my last blog post....along with a mini quilt made from scraps called.....

    Lovely! I have been wanting to make some mug rugs and mug rug madness is definitely making me more excited to jump in!

    I have heard about a few MQG's doing mug rug swaps - sounds very fun! I was curious, how does it work for the actual swap? Are folks assigned a person like with an online swap or do you draw numbers or something and then choose which one to take home?

    How have I never seen the F&F fabrics?! LOVELOVELOVE it!

    I made one mug rug, though it is a bit bigger, around 8x8, I think, and I used an idea from Fat Quarterly! I can't remember the exact name, I think it was the second issue, the bedtime stories quilt, with the Far Far Away!

    I just made some as Valentines presents for my sisters. On the back I took a plain cream colored rectangle and signed it with a Sharpie to say Happy Valentines Day Love sis. Then I appliqued it on the rug. They loved them!

    Okay, so I absolutely love your blog, and I've followed it for a substantial while now.

    This is completely off-post, but I have to say it. While watching the UK vs. NC game tonight, I couldn't help but think of ya, because being knee-deep in wildcat country, you're the only NC fan I know. I'd give you a big hug for tonight's loss, too.

    Love these mug rugs. I've only recently been introduced and I'll be attempting to make 4 this week. I'm not sure of the sizes yet as I can see that it's not a set in stone thing. I get the feeling mug rugs have open possibilities for sizes, patterns, shapes and types. Hope I can find one to use this week!
