Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Blog Tour



I'm so excited to share the news that one of my original block designs is featured in the newest issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks from today's top designers magazine! I've been a loyal customer of this magazine since its first issue because of the many unique and interesting block designs that it offers. Not only would each block make for a spectacular quilt on its own, but the magazine is perfect for someone like me who participates in a lot of online quilting bees and block swaps, because it really broadens your options for fun & interesting quilt block designs.


It completely made my day when I saw the cover of the magazine because, not only is my block included inside, but it even appears on the cover!! If you look at the image above, it's the first block in the second row of 4 blocks (right under the colorful "x"-looking block.)

It's a pretty simple block to construct but creates a really cool graphic effect, especially when you start to play with light and dark tones to create contrast and shadow-like effects. I also love that it can be oriented either vertically or horizontally, and pieced in rows or columns. It's also a great block to show off some favorite prints. (And for those of you who think it looks a little familiar ... it was the process of designing this block that inspired my Ziggity Mug Rug -- a nod to how versatile this design can be.)

For my block, I used an interesting Asian-inspired line called Olympus by Clothworks. You can't really tell from the picture, but many of these prints also have a lot of texture to them, with raised stitches and interesting weaves. I'm currently making a full quilt inspired by my block -- stay tuned for that soon.

To celebrate my first (but hopefully not last) entry into Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks magazine, I'm sending a copy of issue 4 to one Quilt Dad reader.     I have all three of the previous 100 Blocks. I've used them in my local bee's block of the month project. I also use them when teaching quilt techniques/blocks to new quilters learning new techniques. I love the creativity and variety within the magazines. Thanks of the opportunity to win Volume 4!

    Thanks for the chance to win! I won a copy of Volume 3 and also have Volume 2. I've mixed and matched some of the blocks for a wall-hanging (still in progress) and then I've used another block from one to serve as an alternating block for a very large-scale print I bought (also still in progress). It takes me a while to go through the magazines and decide what I want to do with them ... I wish there were a site I could see them all repeated in a quilt! Your block would look really need alternated in directions for a very scrappy look!

    i have not purchased any of the previous issues, but i'm planning to get teh back issues if i can! wow, great use of fabrics. sometimes it's best just to let the fabrics speak simply and elegantly. that's what your block does! great job.

    I have all the previous issues and they are marked with lots of sticky notes for blocks I want to make! I've only actually made a handful of them -- mostly just to try them or to put in table runners. So many plans, so little time!

    I have the 1st which was downloaded and I have printed it and bound it. I haven't used the blocks per se but have benefitted from the knowledge inspiration and exposure to so many gifted and accomplished quilters and continue to follow and absorb as much as possible from not just you but all the quilting community, lovely folk who are so willing to foster new quilters in their growth.

    Great job Quilt Dad! Not too many men would admit to being into quilting! I have all 3 issues of "100 Blocks" & expect to add volume 4 one way or another. I recently participated in a row robin in my quilt guild & I only used blocks from those 3 issues for my contributions. And I got so many people asking where I had found such unique blocks!

    I love the block and the versatility of it. The fabrics chosen instantly reminded me of a collection of men's ties. Hmmm. Have to think about that and how to use it.     I tested your block for vol 4, I use what ever scrappy I have on the table at the time. I was happy to see that this has so many poss for using up favorite fabric or going scrappy. Love your choice of materials- good job! cw

    Love your block! I purchased Vol 2 out of boredom while waiting around in an airport. And I'm sew glad I did. What a treat! Fell in love with Snowman Farm (block 103 on page 23) and made 3 minis for xmas presents that year. So of course I had to purchase Vol 3 when it came out (after I didn't win one!) I have all my favorites marked but haven't made any yet although I have my eye on My Easter Dress (block 217, page34) for a special little girl I know. Can't wait for Vol 4 to be in the stores Of course MAYBE I'll be lucky enuf to win one first! Thanks for the chance.

    I have all three volumes in paper copy. They are so inspirational. Hmmm I can put this design in this project along with this design and have the perfect kids quilt. Hmmm this designer has had a block design in each volume and they all have the same theme. Accessories project? Eggs anyone? Anxious to see if you follow the pattern...     I won a copy of the first issue of 100 Blocks, and I am still in the process of completing a Christmas sampler quilt that utilizes some of the patterns in that issue. All the blocks have been made for more than a year...I started the sashing last Christmas, and now my goal is to have the top finished by this Christmas! The quilting will have to wait until the New Year!

    I have a copy of Volume 3, but have not made any of the blocks due to life getting in the way since spring. There are quite a few marked to try though, Does that count? When I saw the cover I really was intrigued by what turns out to be your block. Now that, I would make now since it is a variety of fabrics.

    Last year was the first I knew about the 100 Blocks, and I have the magazine. Havent made anything exactly as in the magazine yet, but it did inspire me to tweak one of the blocks to make it my own...

    It reminds me of a quilt made with ties, with the fabrics you used, love it.
    I like designs that can use scraps and changed by fabrics and colors.

    Love your block. I combined your Block-a-palooza blocks, the P2 QAL blocks, and the Pearl block from the last issue of 100 quilts to make a larger quilt top.     Great quilt John and HUGE congrats for being included in Vol 4.
    I have purchased all but the first issue although I may actually have purchased the electronic version of issue 1 but I haven't checked. I purchased the other issues because I was starting to become interested in learning to quilt and knew they were issues I needed to buy before they were all gone and that I'd have them for a time when I was doing actual quilting. I just finished my first quilting class in the past couple of months so I have not done anything from the magazines. I've only done the pieced sampler table runner from my class to date.
