Hi everyone! Hope you had a great weekend. Just wanted to pop in with a quick post tonight, since I don't have much to share. And besides, I'm wallowing in the loss by my UNC Tar Heels tonight. Boo.
I was hoping to show off a new quilt this weekend -- and launch a corresponding giveaway to boot! -- but it was rainy all weekend here in NC and I wasn't able to get any good pictures of my quilt. So stay tuned for that.
In the meantime, I wanted to share a few quick things ...
First, did you see this awesome new badge that Tula Pink made available on her blog? I love it! Be sure to grab one and add it to your computer desktop, your blog, your Facebook page, Twitter page, or whatever other social channels you're into these days.
(And speaking of Tula, I may or may not have just finished 2 (yes, 2!) quilts made from her upcoming Nightshade line. You may want to keep your eyes peeled for Fat Quarterly Issue 9 ... I'm just sayin'.)
A Flock of Starlings, by Terri Carpenter (thequiltedfox) as seen on Flickr
Second, I wanted to share this AMAZING mini quilt that Terri (aka thequiltedfox) made and shared in my QuiltDad is my Homeboy Flickr group. It's based on my Modern Starlings block pattern that I shared on the Generation Q blog a while back. And here's the crazy thing -- Terri's quilt is almost EXACTLY what I envisioned when I came up with that block, but haven't had a chance to make myself yet. Terri beat me to it with a similar vision ... and I LOVE it so much! You can read more about Terri's quilt, which she made for a mini quilt challenge, in her blog post here. Thanks, Terri!
Saw The Hunger Games last night. I'd give it a solid "pretty good". At the risk of sounding cliche, the book was better. I mean ... it always is, right? But I think it was pretty well done, overall. The casting and acting was good. I only wish there was a little more of the action from the book, and that some of the complexity of the games and the story translated better to the movie version. But I guess there's only so much you can do in a limited amount of time, huh?
I've also (finally) started watching Game of Thrones on HBO. I'm only just starting to catch up on season 1. I'm two episodes in, and I'm itching to start the third. It seems like something I'll definitely get hooked on. Anyone out there watching it too?
And lastly, are you playing along with our Modern Madness game over on the Fat Quarterly blog? If not, you can read more about it here, or jump right into the fray with our current voting.
OK, enough with the long, rambling, very-unlike-me post. Have a great week, everyone!
I'm a Game of Thrones fan too - watched all of season 1, and then read all the books. And even though the show is quite good, yet again, the books are even better! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with Kelsey on Game of Thrones - the show is great (and totally addictive!) but the books are even better. Very hard to put down :o)
ReplyDeleteI'm rereading the first book, I read it in 1998 or something like that but I don't remember a thing. My DH and I just finished watching the first season, it was soo good! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI'm with the other guys, Game of thrones is awesome but read the books they are even better!
ReplyDeleteCant wait to see the nightshade quilts :D
I am quite in agreement with you anout Hunger Games. I was so UBER psyched to go see the movie! I have not been to a movie in 2 1/2 years (Not a Twi-hard or a Potter fan) and then it was just kind of Oh, OK! Even my Ten year old son (who I made read the book if he wanted to go see the movie) said there was a LOT missing! Oh well!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the 'movement' that your quilt takes on BTW! I think the curved lines were brilliant!! :)
Love the quilting on that mini!
ReplyDeleteGoT... love the show, but there are so many characters that I think I would hate reading the books. I'm usually a die hard read the books before watching the tv show/movie, but for that series (as for LoTR) I think I would just throw the book down in agony. :)
I'm with you on the Tar Heels loss. Very bitter about it!
ReplyDeleteJohn- Thanks so much for all the kind words on my mini! I'm looking forward to seeing your new quilt when the rain stops! Terri
ReplyDeleteYou couldn't possibly be wallowing in UNC's loss as much as my husband and I are wallowing over Michigan State's and Marquette's losses ... especially since we went all the way to Phoenix to see them both get KILLED! Ugh. That is a beautiful quilt, though. : )
ReplyDeleteYup, definitely watching Game of Thrones--can't wait for the new season to start! I've read all 5 books, and I have to say that the show's first season stayed very true to the book, unlike other series *cough*TrueBlood*cough*. Enjoy your new obsession!
ReplyDeleteOoo, that mini is awesome! The colors are perfect :). And I totally agree about books almost always being better than movies...but I still want to see this one!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! yes!! I love love LOVE Game of Thrones!! :) The HBO series is awesome, but the books (as is almost always true) are better. Although I have to say outside of the Lord of the Rings and perhaps Harry Potter book-to-movie "translations", Game of Thrones is pretty darn close to the original. If you're ever hunting for a book to read (based on your game of thrones/hunger games references above) you simply MUST read "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear" by Patrick Rothfuss. BRILLIANT!
ReplyDeleteHi John, just found your blog, love it, though you might not like to see I'm from KANSAS!!! Yes, it is the birthplace of North Carolina basketball! Sorry, saw that on a shirt and it made me smile. I still love Roy, just not when we are playing his team. Anyway, keep quilting away. BTW, I recently visited Tula Pinks' mothers' quilt shop. She owns a shop in Northern Missouri, and there is a ton (go figure) of Tula Pink fabric, quilts, and patterns, it is a must visit if you are ever in the mid-west.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I like Game of Thrones, but if you like it, you would probably love Pillars of the Earth, which was a similar (but better, I think) miniseries on Starz a couple seasons back. It's based on the Ken Follett novel, which was fantastic (and long). Highly recommend!
ReplyDeleteWell you have nailed a few of my favorite things in this post. I love Tula Pink- I just finished a quilt with her Flutterby collection from days gone by. Second- I will be seeing the Hunger Games with my family this weekend. We have all read the series (might be a first that all 6 of us has read the same book). Game of Thrones is in our que to start soon! Plus I love the quilting on Terri's quilt- remarkable.
ReplyDeleteLove the Game of Thrones. My husband and I watch them and we read (audio version while driving to and from work) the books before each season. The show is so true to the books.
ReplyDeleteReally like the flock of starlings quilt, the quilting gives it movement.
Sorry Roy's boys had to lose but I'm so glad my Jayhawks won!!!
ReplyDeletegrumble grumble grumble
DeleteI really dig that Flock of Starlings quilt.. The sort of random-ish quilt lines are so cool.
ReplyDeleteHi, just discovered your blog and I love it. You're very talented! Greetings from Australia! :-)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agree with you on The Hunger Games. Really like the casting and the acting, but they left out a lot of the depth and history of the story. I am watching Game of Thrones. The book series are definitely worth the read. They've done a great job on casting that one as well and have stayed true to the story. Nice to see a fellow fan.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I just finished Series 1. I must say that I am struggling with the sexism and violence in it. Can't say I would watch it ever again. I agree with the great look of the random quilting on that 'flock of starlings'.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and love it!!! I actually have a pinterest board based on costumes from Game of Thrones which I just love. Please check it out, I hope you enjoy it.
