Hello and happy Monday morning! For those who celebrated, I hope you had a wonderful Easter Sunday and holiday weekend. We had gorgeous weather here in North Carolina, and I also had a couple of very productive sewing days. I'll have to share what I worked on this weekend on another day (no pictures yet!), but in the meantime I have a WONDERFUL quilt finish to share with you.
I recently completed this quilt, and it has immediately become one of my favorites. I've loved the Outfox the Fox quilt pattern by Lizzy House since she released it last year, and a few months back I had the idea to make one using the awesome Miscellany fabric line by Julia Rothman for Cloud 9 Fabrics.
I decided to use black fabric -- and a lot of it -- as my background fabric. This was completely new for me, since I usually default to white, off-white, or light grey when using a dominant background color. Black was the perfect choice to highlight the Miscellany prints. And, speaking of those prints, they're really too beautiful to chop up, which is why Outfox the Fox was the perfect pattern to show off those large-scale designs.
Just for fun, I added a few of the Miscellany scraps to my binding strip, and positioned them so that they'd run along the top edge of the quilt. It's an added bonus for the person laying under the quilt to catch a glimpse of the prints as he (or she, if I let someone else use it : ) pulls it up underneath his chin!
Like the quilting? It was done by Bethany Pease from bethanyquilts.com (who, by the way, just released her first book, Modern Quilting Designs, with C&T Publishing. Congratulations, Bethany!)

I love your quilt but if I were to make mine, it would be Amy Butler's old line Daisy in Basil. Love the shapes and colors of the fabric. Background, I would stick to medium gray, or maybe Pepper. Too many choices.

I'd pick Jenean Morrison's Grand Hotel (due soon). For the Azure palette, I'd pick FS solid in Admiral and for the Sunset palette, it would be Saffron. You know me, never the safe choice!

Maybe a pop of orange would be in order, maybe yellow if the orange looked too Hallowe'eny (yep it's a word)

If I were to make this quilt, I'd use my stash and would choose hot pink and orange fabrics. A crazy combination that I'm itching to try. Charcoal for the background.

It's such a great line and the colorways are just beautiful, so I would def be using that for this quilt. I think....with the oranges and purples....I would probably pair it was kona baby pink....or maybe even a shade lighter, because I like the way those colors play off each other

This is really, really a beautiful quilt.
I would use University of Kentucky logo fabric and a fabric that is the color of basketballs for the background. I would make this for you grandson!

Such a clean and modern pattern, I just love it! I have some outfoxed in the green and purple colourways so I'd probably use that with a nice chocolate brown background.

ReplyDeleteI really like the black/dark background you've used. I really want to make quilts for my grown boys, and i'm thinking this pattern would really work out nicely. As for the fabric - one of them *I think* has the black/white and maybe red thing going on. He likes very graphic things so I'd likely want to find black and white with maybe some red larger designs. My other son has tan/dark brown - so I could likely use red/rust/tan/brown kind of color way. (Oh, maybe blues/tans/browns would be nice!) Thanks for the post. ReplyDeleteMy goodness - choosing fabrics is always the hardest for me -too many possibilities. I love your quilt, though, with the so much black. Very modern! I think I would like to go with a variety of coppers, reds and grays with a touch of yellow. Background could be a darker gray. Sounds dreary, but I'll bet it would pop!

ReplyDeleteLove your quilt-you are pretty brave going with the black. While I love black & have used it for background, it is sooo hard to sew with (my eyes just don't see as well anymore). I have a wonderful concrete color from Sweetwater's Homecoming line that I bought yards & yards of. I would probably use that & some of my Reunion stash for this pattern. I am in love with Hello Luscious and Salt Air. I think the more curvy lines of Salt Air would be great contrast to the squares of pattern- with Kona Navy. I am using that combination for a Schnibbles pattern right now. Hello Luscious would be lovely as well- again the more floral type design. Not sure on background colour. Maybe just straight up white because there is so much colour in the prints.

I think I was made to quilt, because it gives me so much joy. Being that I am new, I have a very limited fabric stash. I do love boutique style fabrics and royal jewel tone fabrics against white so they pop! Thank you for the change to win.

ReplyDeleteI have some Zoology by Michael Miller that I am saving for a special project. It lends itself well to fussy cutting and pairing it with other Michael Miller fabrics would make a fun quilt. The background color would have to be the aqua blue that matches the sea colorway. I also have some old (very old) zebra stripe that coordinates well. I have already made a quilt for a friend using these fabrics and now I want one of my own.

ReplyDeleteI have looked at that pattern many times and your quilt is wonderful using it. It is a lovely giveaway, thank you. I would love to make it with Habitat. And I am not sure about the back, I think I would pick a pink that works with but does not match the pinks or maybe a turquoise or blue that again picks up on but does not match the blues in the prints I have. Or maybe white, or grey.

Oh, I like the black background! And the quilting is perfect - Bethany is a doll! Let's see...I've been itching to make a quilt with a purple background...like Kona eggplant or raisen. Fun!
ReplyDeleteI'd take the Kona Bright Solids through the colour sprectrum on a medium grey solid background. Maybe a dark grey or black binding, but that's last to decide.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a great pattern! I'm loving Kona Ash for backgrounds now so that would be my background color. And I would love to use some pieces from Half Moon Modern if there is any still available to buy. I think the bright colors would just pop on the grey.

ReplyDeleteWow-I really love your quilt! The black is wonderful! I think I would make this quilt with a mix of Denyse Schmidt fabrics--most of the ones with orange and/or fuschia in them. (a mix of Aunt Edna, Hope Valley and one other line..I think.) I am leaning toward Robert Kaufmans linen for quilters in Taupe for the background.
ReplyDeleteI would like to make Outfoxed in "Curious Nature" by David Butler. I love the earthy colour range and the geometric patterns. For the background I could use black, which is always a safe choice, although i would like to experiment with a deep midnight, or chocolate or rust or a range of dark greys used randomly across the background. Oh I think I'll make a series!!

I absolutely LOVE this quilt! Personally, I like the richness of the dark background with the busy prints.
ReplyDeleteHowever, since I am the mother of 3 daughters, I would probably make this quilt in Summer House or Trade Winds by Lily Ashbury with the most subtle robin's egg blue print in the collection for the background.
I also think it would be lovely in Verona with a swirly gray background.
Great pattern and I love your version! I think I'd love to do this one using Parson Gray fabrics, probably on a gray background.
ReplyDeleteOooh. Your version with Miscellany is fabulous! I love that line, and Lizzy House, too! Hmm, I have a stack of the Ta-Dot prints that would be really fun in this design. I would probably use Kona Stone or Medium Grey with them, or maybe try to pick a solid that wasn't accounted for in the dots.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great pattern! Love the idea of using it for prints that are just to amazing to chop. That pattern would be awesome with some magenta, plum and lime floral prints I have. It would make a great throw in our living room (granny smith green walls....yeah, I love color.) I'd probably do a white/offwhite background, although I do usually love the contrast with black.

I would use a bright orange background: Clothworks' Everyday Organics Orange and then light taupes, grays and blues for the all the bricks in the center! Gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteOh I really like that fabric. Your pictures make it look like plus signs, but the more you look at it you (I mean I) realize they are not all the same fabric in one plus. The pattern looks like tetris - which is a game my Mom loves and so I thought of her. Anyway, I think I would do a bright print for the background, and then use solids for the pieces. HHmmm, awesome.

Thanks for the chance. I think this pattern might be good for Tailor Made flannels - and a solid Kona background (black, red, white, or grey). This would definitely give variation in texture. Plus, I have the flannel already. I've never made a black and white quilt before so would be a challenge.
