Outfox the Fox | A quilt and a giveaway

Outfox the Fox Quilt

Hello and happy Monday morning!  For those who celebrated, I hope you had a wonderful Easter Sunday and holiday weekend.  We had gorgeous weather here in North Carolina, and I also had a couple of very productive sewing days.  I'll have to share what I worked on this weekend on another day (no pictures yet!), but in the meantime I have a WONDERFUL quilt finish to share with you.

Outfox the Fox Quilt

I recently completed this quilt, and it has immediately become one of my favorites.  I've loved the Outfox the Fox quilt pattern by Lizzy House since she released it last year, and a few months back I had the idea to make one using the awesome Miscellany fabric line by Julia Rothman for Cloud 9 Fabrics.

Outfox the Fox Quilt

I decided to use black fabric -- and a lot of it -- as my background fabric.  This was completely new for me, since I usually default to white, off-white, or light grey when using a dominant background color.  Black was the perfect choice to highlight the Miscellany prints.  And, speaking of those prints, they're really too beautiful to chop up, which is why Outfox the Fox was the perfect pattern to show off those large-scale designs.

Outfox the Fox Quilt

Just for fun, I added a few of the Miscellany scraps to my binding strip, and positioned them so that they'd  run along the top edge of the quilt.  It's an added bonus for the person laying under the quilt to catch a glimpse of the prints as he (or she, if I let someone else use it : ) pulls it up underneath his chin!

Outfox the Fox Quilt

Like the quilting?  It was done by Bethany Pease from bethanyquilts.com (who, by the way, just released her first book, Modern Quilting Designs, with C&T Publishing.  Congratulations, Bethany!)

So, are you as big a fun of the big, bold, and modern Outfox the Fox pattern as I am?  Well, today's your lucky day!  Lizzy herself sent me an extra copy of the pattern to give away to a Quilt Dad reader, and I'll even throw in a charm pack of Lizzy's Outfoxed fabric line that I have on hand.  Simply leave a comment on this post and let me know what fabric you'd love to make Outfox the Fox with, including your choice of background color.  I'm curious to hear all of your fabric and color ideas!

Good luck!

  1. wow first comment! I'd make it from the Washi tape line by Rashida Coleman Hale. And I would use a pink for the background to really make it pop.
    Thanks

  2. I love your quilt but if I were to make mine, it would be Amy Butler's old line Daisy in Basil. Love the shapes and colors of the fabric. Background, I would stick to medium gray, or maybe Pepper. Too many choices.

    ReplyDelete
  3. That looks great!

I'd probably make this quilt out of my stash, since I have so much to pull from. No one fabric line, but it would probably have a bunch of blues and greens in it.

    Thanks for the chance!

  4. I'd pick Jenean Morrison's Grand Hotel (due soon). For the Azure palette, I'd pick FS solid in Admiral and for the Sunset palette, it would be Saffron. You know me, never the safe choice!

  5. Wow! I love your quilt and Lizzy's pattern. The black has my head trying to come up with fabrics....Yes, I've got it! Parson grey! The quilt would be sombre, but masculine ....I think. Maybe a pop of orange would be in order, maybe yellow if the orange looked too Hallowe'eny (yep it's a word)

  6. This is a beautiful quilt. I love using black in my quilts as it just gives them an usual pop. Very interesting pattern.

  7. This quilt is awesome. I'd love to try this pattern using my Kate Spain Terrain stack, and Kona Hibiscus (dark dark purple) as the background. I love your black background. The Outfoxed fabrics are so cute, I've been collecting a few cuts as I find them at my LQSs.

  8. What a sophisticated quilt---the black is perfect!

  9. Thank you for the giveaway, and congrats on the quilt finish! The quilting pattern is really nice, too. Looks like roses had been sprinkled on the quilt. If I were to make this quilt, I'd use my stash and would choose hot pink and orange fabrics. A crazy combination that I'm itching to try. Charcoal for the background.

  10. I love this quilt John! and I adore outfoxed....I'm in the middle of collecting it now! It's such a great line and the colorways are just beautiful, so I would def be using that for this quilt. I think....with the oranges and purples....I would probably pair it was kona baby pink....or maybe even a shade lighter, because I like the way those colors play off each other

  11. i'd love to do it in all kona solids with a grey background. love the pattern!!!

  15. I love this quilt. I think I would make the background fabric gray and use a combination of orange and blue prints. This would be a good opportunity to use some of my larger scale prints I have been hoarding for the right project.

  16. Pretty! I think I would use Kate Spain's Good Fortune with an orange background (I've been dying to make an orange quilt!).

  29. I really like the black/dark background you've used. I really want to make quilts for my grown boys, and i'm thinking this pattern would really work out nicely. As for the fabric - one of them *I think* has the black/white and maybe red thing going on. He likes very graphic things so I'd likely want to find black and white with maybe some red larger designs. My other son has tan/dark brown - so I could likely use red/rust/tan/brown kind of color way. (Oh, maybe blues/tans/browns would be nice!) Thanks for the post. Thanks for getting my creative juices flowing with the concept of this quilt for my boys.

    ReplyDelete
  30. For my next quilt, I'm thinking about using any print with owls...I know, sounds weird(?)...but I love owls. Maybe a forest green for the background.

  55. Ooh.. I love your quilt! I have a FQ bundle of miscellany to use up, but I think I'd like to use Monsterz to make a quilt for my new nephew :) I'd pull a color from the collection to make the background and use the panel print from the line to make the backing :) thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oooh! I have a fat quarter bundle of Miscellany that I am wondering what I should do with! This quilt would also be lovely with some Amy Butler Lark fat quarters and a nice bright canary yellow backing. It would be so summery!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  63. Echo, with either a dark blue or mustard yellow background fabric!

    ReplyDelete

I have a wonderful concrete color from Sweetwater's Homecoming line that I bought yards & yards of. I would probably use that & some of my Reunion stash for this pattern. Thanks for the chance to win this.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Love your version, the black is stunning choice. I'd love to make this in Happy Mochi Yum Yum format the Zombie herself and use an orange background. Saw this combo at Sew Modern and it knocked my socks off!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Love that quilt! I'd say I'd have to make mine with Ana maria horner's loulouthi line. I love her bold designs. My background would have to be a deep purple, since that is my go to color!
I love your blog. I just recently found it, so I am having fun getting to know you and your family!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I am in love with Hello Luscious and Salt Air. I think the more curvy lines of Salt Air would be great contrast to the squares of pattern- with Kona Navy. I am using that combination for a Schnibbles pattern right now. Hello Luscious would be lovely as well- again the more floral type design. Not sure on background colour. Maybe just straight up white because there is so much colour in the prints.

  74. Hey Quilt Dad! I am a new quilter. I just started taking lessons at the local senior citizen center in town, although I'm only 26! I think I was made to quilt, because it gives me so much joy. Being that I am new, I have a very limited fabric stash. I do love boutique style fabrics and royal jewel tone fabrics against white so they pop! Thank you for the change to win.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  80. Some Kaffe would look lovely with this pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  81. What a great pattern! I like it with the black, but since we have a Siamese cat, it might not be the best color for cat hair:)

I am making a quilt right now with Hello Pilgrim and some DS Quilts prints. I am really digging the butterfly prints in blue and aqua, so I think this quilt would look great with those two prints and some cool blues.

    Thanks for the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I love what you've done with your quilt. Dramatic without being over the top. I'll have to keep a copy in my 'inspiration stash'. I have some Curious Nature coming that would look awesome in this pattern. Also have some Tula Pink and a couple others that, as you say, I hate to cut, that might be good. If I went with Curious Nature, I would want to audition against a charcoal. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Oh, I adore the black background! And the quilting is just perfect. I am trying desperately to use up various bits from past projects, and so I'd probably cobble together a variety. I'd love to do a black & blue hued one for my son and a brown & orange hued one for my daughter!

    ReplyDelete
  100. What a great pattern. I think I would use a vintage yellow background with the boho line.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think I'd go stash diving for my aqua's and use a black background; I don't even know what half the fabric lines I have are so can't give a line name.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Beautiful finish! I have to agree that black was the perfect choice. I would love to make one of these with Lark and use Kona Candy Green or Tangerine as the background. Both would make very lovely, but very different quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I have some Zoology by Michael Miller that I am saving for a special project. It lends itself well to fussy cutting and pairing it with other Michael Miller fabrics would make a fun quilt. The background color would have to be the aqua blue that matches the sea colorway. I also have some old (very old) zebra stripe that coordinates well. I have already made a quilt for a friend using these fabrics and now I want one of my own.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I need lots of patterns for large prints - i have a great stash of Amy Butler's Pop Garden and Midwest Modern - would definitely pick either a taupey background or a pink maybe....

    ReplyDelete
  114. I have looked at that pattern many times and your quilt is wonderful using it. It is a lovely giveaway, thank you. I would love to make it with Habitat. And I am not sure about the back, I think I would pick a pink that works with but does not match the pinks or maybe a turquoise or blue that again picks up on but does not match the blues in the prints I have. Or maybe white, or grey.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I love the colors in your quilt! I'm so brand new to quilting, all the "fabric lines" are Greek to me...the only thing I've had my eye on so far is the Alexander Henry "Ghastlies" line. I love the line in Natural and pair it with a pink background.

This would be the perfect pattern for my very first quilt.

  160. I think this is a great pattern! I'm loving Kona Ash for backgrounds now so that would be my background color. And I would love to use some pieces from Half Moon Modern if there is any still available to buy. I think the bright colors would just pop on the grey.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I would want to use a turquoise background color, and I'm not quite sure what line of fabrics, maybe something scrappy, that would be fun!

    ReplyDelete
  162. I'm in love with the soft gray backgrounds lately... and only a splash or two of color (either aqua or citron would be my options today!)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  165. I am wanting to make something with the Hello Luscious fabric, probably on a cream or light turquoise background. This is a really cool pattern! Would love to try it!

    ReplyDelete
  166. Wow-I really love your quilt! The black is wonderful! I think I would make this quilt with a mix of Denyse Schmidt fabrics--most of the ones with orange and/or fuschia in them. (a mix of Aunt Edna, Hope Valley and one other line..I think.) I am leaning toward Robert Kaufmans linen for quilters in Taupe for the background.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I would like to make Outfoxed in "Curious Nature" by David Butler. I love the earthy colour range and the geometric patterns. For the background I could use black, which is always a safe choice, although i would like to experiment with a deep midnight, or chocolate or rust or a range of dark greys used randomly across the background. Oh I think I'll make a series!!

    ReplyDelete
  168. I love the colors and fabrics you choose for this design! Currently I have a stash of fat quarters titled: Lawn Better Gnomes and Gardens by Heather DuPont. I think my background choice would be a woodsy brown. Thanks for posting pictures of your quilts!

  174. I absolutely LOVE this quilt! Personally, I like the richness of the dark background with the busy prints.
However, since I am the mother of 3 daughters, I would probably make this quilt in Summer House or Trade Winds by Lily Ashbury with the most subtle robin's egg blue print in the collection for the background.
I also think it would be lovely in Verona with a swirly gray background.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Great pattern and I love your version! I think I'd love to do this one using Parson Gray fabrics, probably on a gray background.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Oooh. Your version with Miscellany is fabulous! I love that line, and Lizzy House, too! Hmm, I have a stack of the Ta-Dot prints that would be really fun in this design. I would probably use Kona Stone or Medium Grey with them, or maybe try to pick a solid that wasn't accounted for in the dots.

    Thanks for sharing, John!

  177. Wonderful quilt!! I love the fabrics and black was definitely the right choice for the background :o)

    ReplyDelete
  178. I love black and am actually trying to stop using it so much!

    ReplyDelete
  179. What a great pattern! Love the idea of using it for prints that are just to amazing to chop. That pattern would be awesome with some magenta, plum and lime floral prints I have. It would make a great throw in our living room (granny smith green walls....yeah, I love color.) I'd probably do a white/offwhite background, although I do usually love the contrast with black.

  180. As modern as your fabric choices look I can imagine it with a bright pink background with the squares being brights shades of pinks and purples........just perfect for a little granddaughter. thanks for the chance to win and
    happy sewing

    ReplyDelete
  185. I think I'd use flea market fancy, with a gray background or plain white!

    ReplyDelete
  186. Oh I really like that fabric. Your pictures make it look like plus signs, but the more you look at it you (I mean I) realize they are not all the same fabric in one plus. The pattern looks like tetris - which is a game my Mom loves and so I thought of her. Anyway, I think I would do a bright print for the background, and then use solids for the pieces. HHmmm, awesome.

  194. Well hrm, I have some kona flannel of some light blue variant on it's way and I'd love to try that with some of Aneela Hoely's walk in the woods line. Thank you for the giveaway!

  195. Thanks for the chance. I think this pattern might be good for Tailor Made flannels - and a solid Kona background (black, red, white, or grey). This would definitely give variation in texture. Plus, I have the flannel already. I've never made a black and white quilt before so would be a challenge. Plus, flannel works better if pieces are larger too. alternate email mlwright29(at)hotmail(dot)com
