A few weeks back I posted about a new project that I called the Undersea Quilt. It was born out of a block swap that I organized with the members of the Triangle Modern Quilt Guild. Read more here.
Since that time, I've added the entire left hand column and bottom row, made entirely from new blocks sent to me by my Twitter friends. I'm waiting on a few more blocks and will add another column.
Isn't this quilt the coolest? It's rapidly becoming one of my favorites. Like, ever.

Note to self: figure out a better way to hang quilts for pictures so that the entire top row isn't cut off!
The deets:
- Blocks are 15" square each.
- I requested 12.5" wonky square-in-square / improv style blocks, and added a 2.5" frame around each block.
- Fabrics are an eclectic mix of Momo lines (Wonderland, Odyssea, Freebird, It's a Hoot, and Just Wing It) combined with some oliver + s Modern Workshop, solids, and anything else that the block-makers wanted to add!
It looks great, John! I really love how all the blocks work together, even though they were made by so many people. It was fun helping you and I can't wait to see the quilt when it's done!
ReplyDeleteLove it, John!! A well needed burst of color in these dreary winter days.
ReplyDeleteI have the same note to self going on in my head. I want an outdoor shot but where to hang it so that I get the right light and a straight shot. I've seen CrazyMomQuilts use binder clips on the gutters of her house but that requires a ladder. :-)
ReplyDeletePretty! I love the colors - scrappy quilts that are colorful are my favorite!
ReplyDeleteGreat picture - Julie Herman just posted about taking pictures by pinning strips of fabrics in loops, that can be hung from a tree branch ... also, clamps! You may want to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI can see why it is your fav. I am really loving this square in a square improv style. And that big size really allows for some more interest in the block. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteGreat colour combo, cant wait to see it finished!
ReplyDeleteIs beautiful
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning quilt! You must be so excited!
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous! So bright and colorful.
ReplyDeleteI have a dog runner cable tied from one tree to another in my backyard, I use binder clips to hang my quilts from it. Good luck finding a solution!
Lovely and fun quilt:) I am looking forward to seeing the finished quilt!
ReplyDeleteDouble-sided tape is great for holding quilts up. If you have a large, heavy quilt, you can use carpoet tape - but I wouldn't use that on the back of a flimsy - it sticks VERY well! I use on or the other for photographing all my quilts - I tape them square to a large outside wall; I can get well back from the quilt, it gives me a good angle (i.e. none!) and good light; I do it while it's completely shaded, but with plenty of ambient sunlight.
ReplyDeleteI currently have a quilt top clipped to a shower curtain in an unused bathroom. It works surprisingly well, although the surrounding background is not the best for a public photo, perhaps. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun quilt!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt and how it works together with multiple people making the blocks. Awesome colors! I would say it is a very "Rockin" quilt. Thanks so much for sharing. I does get the wheels a turning!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that quilt! No wonder it might be your favorite
ReplyDeleteVery cool indeed. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, all the blocks look so good. I can't pick my favorite. As for hanging the quilts, get a rod and a few clamps. You can put the rod just about anywhere.
ReplyDeleteWhat about a clothesline?
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is coming along nicely too :)
This is lovely! A tip for hanging to photo without losing that top row? Depending on your fence, you can just clip a few regular clothes pins to the top edge, and flip that little bit up over the edge. It takes a little tinkering to get it all strait, but as long as it's not too windy it should hold long enough to snap some pics. You'll lose just an inch or two that way, rather than a whole set of blocks! :) Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteI just love the red + aqua block at lower right. The quilt is looking incredible!
ReplyDeleteThe color combination is fantastic with that ochreish brown next to the vibrant reds.
ReplyDeleteStop by the hardware store for some heavy duty hand clamps (the spring loaded kind), then you can clamp the quilt to your fence without damaging either. Bonus points if you paint the clamps to look like old fashioned clothes pins.
ReplyDeleteI made you two blocks over the weekend! You sent so much fabric, I still have some...should I make another one or two!?
ReplyDeleteUmmm, yes, that is the coolest quilt EVAR. LOVE!
ReplyDeleteHello! I love all your quilts! You mix colours so great and I love the patterns you use - lots of shapes and colours but not too complicated!
ReplyDeleteI saw you take a part in a book - congratulations! I had lost your address for a while but now I'll be here again often!
Sunny wishes from Crete! Teje
hey, i think i made a block for that quilt! it looks great. inspires me to get mine out and do something with them.
ReplyDeletebuy pants hangers with clips... then hang the hanger off the top edge!
ReplyDeletei see my block top right!
